Philippos Hotel Kassiopi Corfu
Kassiopi PDF Print E-mail

Kassiopi is a typical Greek fishing village surrounded by hills that has grown into a tourist resort almost gracefully. There are little side streets to walk along with small tavernas and shops. The small harbour and jetty are very picturesque. There are daily boat trips and many pleasant walks. Kassiopi is about 20 Km due South of Sidari along good winding roads. Visit the Byzantine fort or take a boat trip. The busy little harbour always has a few fishing boats in and often you will find people fishing. Easy to find and well worth a day out.

Kassiopi has a long history that goes back beyond Roman times when Tiberius built a villa there. Nero is another emperor who visited Kassiopi. Very little evidence of this survives today however and all that is left now is a very pretty sixteenth-century church and the ruins of a castle on the hill.

Kassiopi is not renowned for it's beaches but there are small ones nearby. Kassiopi still retains narrow winding roads which are great fun to explore or there are several nice walks that take you into the hills. Many of the trips available from other Corfu resorts come to Kassiopi. The harbour often has boats from all over the Mediterranean stopping for short visits as well as the local fishing boats. The bleak Albanian coast is only a short distance away and looks like another planet.

Things To See and Do

Kassiopitissa Church stands on what is said to be the site of a temple of Zeus near the harbour. Built in 1590 it contains a fascinating painting of a boy who was blinded as a punishment for stealing some wheat with two friends.

He took refuge in the church where he only discovered his sight had been miraculously restored when he saw the church candle go out.

Take the path opposite the church’s bell tower and you’ll find yourself at a ruined Byzantine fortress. The entrance, almost hidden by wild flowers, leads you to a vantage point offering spectacular views over Kassiopi’s bay and up to Mount Pantokrator.

Set sail at sunset to tour past the pretty bays of Kalami, Kerasia and Kouloura then stop for dinner in Aghios Stefanos.
